Chief steward's daughter gets Liverpool jersey

The 17-year-old, who had captured the attention of many when she posted heartbreaking tweets on the disappearance of Andrew, a Liverpool fan, yesterday received a heartwarming gift in the form of a Liverpool jersey, signed by the club's manager and players.

On her Twitter account yesterday, she expressed her appreciation to three Malaysian Liverpool fans who had flown to the club's home ground, Anfield, to get the jersey signed by the team.

The fans had watched Liverpool play a match against Tottenham Hotspurs and got the jersey signed.

Maira, who dedicated the gift to her father, also uploaded a photo of her wearing the jersey, which bore Andrew's name.

She wrote: "Dear Liverpool, I want you to know that I have received this gift from you.
"Big thanks to the three Malaysian Liverpool fans who actually went through a few obstacles to just get this jersey signed by Liverpool players and their manager!"

Maira said she would frame the jersey and dedicated it to her father.
"Dad, this is for you. I bet you're the happiest person on earth right now.

"May Liverpool always be on top of the chart, and hope you will win this season for daddy, for us, and for the fans. God bless and thank you so much! I could not ask for more."

Maira also felt that her father would have been proud of the club, which beat Manchester City 3-2 yesterday to move a step closer to winning the Premier League title.
"Liverpool is truly a family," she wrote.

Kg Tanduo chief's Son is Coordinator for Sulu Group

Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar - Read his biodata
A son of a former Kampung Tanduo village chief is believed to be the local coordinator for the Sulu terror group.

He was among four people, two of whom are key figures behind the group, who were arrested over the past 24 hours.

The other is the Sulu group's military commander who was picked up while hiding in the swamps in Semporna as police further crippled the Sulu terrorists network operating there and in Lahad Datu.

Deputy Inspector General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar said the two key figures were arrested with their wives.

He said the local coordinator, in his early 40's, was arrested with his wife in the Felda Sahabat area at about 10pm on Friday.

The man possessed a Malaysian identity card, he told reporters.

The man is being detained under the Immigration Act pending verification of his identification documents.

"He is an important figure as he was the one who arranged for accommodation, food, drinks and medical treatment since the group arrived here (Feb 9)," Khalid said.

He said the military commander, in his late 40s, was arrested at about 1am on Saturday and has a Philippines passport.

"Now we believe the group has been further crippled. They have lost their source of local support and they now have no direction," Khalid said.

He did not elaborate on the identity of the commander.

He said the arrests were made possible with the assistance of the local communities.
So far, 408 people have been detained under the various laws since the launching of the offensive against the Sulu terror group dubbed as Ops Daulat on March 5.

Another 108 people have been detained under the Special Offences (Special Measures) Act (SOSMA).

Sixty-three gunmen have been killed in the ongoing offensive.
On Thursday's Kembara Sakti incident in Felda Sahabat where more than 1,000 fled their villages after hearing that a woman was held hostage, Khalid said:
"From our initial investigation, what happened yesterday was made to be more serious that it actually is."

"There is no reason for the community there to feel afraid. They can return home. We will be with them,'' he added. Read a full articles here :

Schools must push a sports culture - Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin

See Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin Biography

Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said schools in Malaysia needed to be more innovative in inculcating a sports culture in line with the 1 Student, 1 Sport policy.
Admitting this was easier for schools that already had a good sports infrastructure, Muhyiddin, who is also Education Minister, said it was not beyond schools that did not have this infrastructure to push a sports culture that people could be proud of.

"Schools without good sports infrastructure can excel in cross country runs or other suitable sports, make use of facilities made available by the local authorities, at neighbouring schools or universities.

"It is up to the wisdom of the leadership of the school to find facilities and ways to promote sports," he told Malaysian journalists covering his two-day working visit to Alabama, the United States, here Saturday. - Bernama

The burglary apparently took place when the family, along with their housekeeper, were away celebrating from 7pm on Tuesday.

Also missing were a special edition collection of currency notes and gold coins issued by Bank Negara, jewellery worth thousands of ringgit, luxury watches and electronic items.

A member of the family celebrating his birthday that day said most of the valuables were taken from a safe inside his room.

“I've been keeping those items for many years,” he said, speaking on the condition that he is not named.

“I am surprised that the safe was not broken into, but actually opened as if someone knew the code number,” he said.

The pensioner said he, five members of his family and the house keeper, returned home around midnight to find the house burgled.

“It was in a mess and three rooms had been ransacked,” he said, when met at his bungalow yesterday.

He said the robbers had gained access by climbing over a back wall and via the kitchen.
While the house is well-equipped with a security and alarm system, the family did not activate it as they were only going to be out for a couple of hours. Even the closed-circuit television camera had no tape.

“According to neighbours, a lorry and three cars were parked outside my house when we were out,” he said.

No Sympathy for Errant Cabbies

president CAP : S. M. Mohamed Idris

KUALA LUMPUR: Consumers have little or no sympathy for taxi drivers who protested their working conditions and brought traffic in the heart of the city to a standstill.

While conceding that not all taxi drivers were unreasonable, commuters said many of them refused to use the meter and charged exorbitant flat rates while others chose where they were willing to go and by which route.

They were responding to the action of about 100 taxi drivers who gathered in Jalan Bukit Bintang from 3pm to 7pm on Tuesday to voice their grievances, including the introduction of the free GO-KL buses which they said affected their business.

They also complained of being harassed by SPAD, the Land Public Transport Commission, which they said restricted parking and pick-up areas.

Detractors of the taxi drivers are not confined to locals. At least two international websites have nothing good to say about them.

LondonCabs.co.uk rank Kuala Lumpur taxi drivers as the worst in the world. Another, Ratestogo.com, put KL as number three after Phnom Penh and Jakarta.

On the local scene, designer Chandra Shegar, 39, who has been relying on public transport for the past 15 years, said many taxi drivers refused to take passengers to certain places.

“Sometimes I would want to go to KL from PJ, but the driver refuses, forcing me to wait for another cab. This never happens in countries like Singapore, where drivers are not allowed to refuse a passenger.

“Others refuse to use the meter. It usually costs me RM10 to RM15 to get from The Curve in Mutiara Damansara to my home in SS1 but some taxi drivers insist on charging a flat rate of RM30 or more,” he said.

He, however, noted that there were taxi drivers who didn't flout the rules.
“Having taken taxis for so long, there are some drivers whom I am familiar with and they are actually very nice. Sometimes, they even offer discounts,” he said.

Public relations accounts director Michele Malini Mahendra, 36, has a regular taxi driver who picks her from her home in Putra Heights to her office in Petaling Jaya.

“I used to have really bad experiences with taxis. I used to stay in Kota Kemuning (in Shah Alam) and when I called for a cab, the driver would insist on RM10 on top of the metered fare,” she added.

In GEORGE TOWN, Consumers Association of Penang president S. M. Mohamed Idris said CAP had been trying for 30 years to get cabbies to use the meter “but it has all been in vain”.
He said the taxi drivers also refused to cruise around looking for customers and instead only waited at certain areas to pick up foreigners, who they thought could be fleeced.

Idris said SPAD had promised to conduct a study on the problem of cabbies taking longer routes and refusing to use the meter.

Penang Consumer Protection Association president K. Koris said: ”Cabbies unhappy with the meter rates should discuss the matter with the Government, not take it out on consumers.”

In recent months, cabbies in Penang have come under heavy fire from visitors, many of whom had written to The Star.

American March Sullivan said taxi drivers already had tyre subsidy, personal accident insurance and were eligible for individual permits to improve their livelihood and, therefore, should be made to use the meter.

Julian Wilford from Rickmansworth in Britain said Penang cabbies who charged “arbitrary rates” made Malaysia look like a backward, Third World nation. Source : The Star

Saying ‘I do’ Gangnam style

PETALING JAYA: One man proved that no act is too extravagant if it's for his sweetheart when he orchestrated an elaborate K-pop-themed flash mob wedding proposal.

Joshua Wong Yin Ai boogied with 33 of his closest friends to a medley that included songs like Lovey Dovey by T-ara, Gangnam Style by Psy, Fantastic Baby by Big Bang and 1,2,3,4 by the Plain White T's before popping the question to Nancy Lim outside Laundry Bar at the Curve on Wednesday.

Through blushes and laughter, she accepted his proposal.
Wong said he planned the romantic stunt over three weeks after his initial idea of proposing to her via a giant billboard across her office window failed due to logistics.

“I wanted to give her something grand and special; after many suggestions I decided on the flash mob proposal,” said Wong, adding that he chose the K-pop theme as they both enjoyed the genre.
The 27-year-old assistant manager said he had to videotape the choreography and upload it onto the Internet for his friends to practise on their own.

“Many of us couldn't meet up all together because we were working,” he said.
“I was so nervous as we only had two rehearsals together.”
The hard work paid off as Lim, 29, was caught totally by surprise as she was about to leave the shopping complex after work.

“There are no words to describe how I am feeling right now. There are none,” Lim gushed.
She added that she had received a torrent of gifts from Wong earlier yesterday as it was their third-year “anniversary”.

Namewee Vs Chong Wei Controversy

"Nasi Lemak 2.0" director Namewee revealed that his latest music clip posted on YouTube recently was just a way to get Malaysia's national badminton star, Dato' Lee Chong Wei, to attend the gala premiere of his second directorial feature, "Hantu Gangster".

After watching Lee's unsuccessful attempts to net Malaysia their first gold medal in the 2012 London Olympics in his match against Lin Dan from China, Namewee expressed his condolences to the former world champion by dedicating a song to him on the social video site. However, the clip turned controversial when it sparked criticisms among local and Chinese fans about Namewee's support for Lee, claiming that he was going about it in a wrong way by attacking Lin Dan with much too harsh words in the lyrics.

When asked for his side of the story, the "Hantu Gangster" director explained, "As a huge badminton fan, I was just expressing my opinions and disappointment on Dato' Lee's loss in the finals. I did not create the video to promote my new movie with Lee's name. I heard that he went to support "Nasi Lemak 2.0" last year, so this year I wanted to invite him to watch "Hantu Gangster", as I hoped that my movie could cheer him up after losing in such a tight battle. We had called him previously, but I wanted my invitation to be special, so I made the video, but as it turned out, he could not make it to the gala premiere due to his busy schedule."

Nevertheless, the Muar-born filmmaker, who generated a buzz among fans with pictures and videos showing him injured on his Facebook account, once again attracted public attention when he showed up at the gala premiere of "Hantu Gangster" in hospital garments with cuts and bruises on his face. He even walked the red carpet using a pair of crutches.
"Those pictures and videos were part of my promotional activities for my new movie. We designed the gimmicks based on my character's story in "Hantu Gangster", not on shock value. You will understand when you watch the film," replied Namewee, when some remarked that he resorted to cheap stunts to obtain publicity for himself.

Through his film, the controversial filmmaker aimed to promote unity among Malaysians, as it boasts a multi-racial cast, which includes Farid Kamil, Diana Danielle, Amber Chia, Dato' Amurugam and Dennis Lau.

"I want to tell everyone that racial discrimination is not created by the people. There is no problem living together with different races. I hope the movie can lead you to see the truth behind some of the society issues that is happening in our country."
"Hantu Gangster" is now showing in cinemas!

Govt Restructuring Subsidies

Datuk Dr Awang Adek Hussin. Read his biography here
The Finance Ministry is studying a restructuring of all forms of subsidies, especially oil and gas, to ensure they benefit target groups and help reduce the burden of low-income earners.
Deputy Finance Minister Datuk Dr Awang Adek Hussin said he welcomed suggestions on the matter from any quarters, to be included for the tabling of Budget 2013.

He told this to reporters after meeting residents of Kampung Perupuk here Sunday.

Awang Adek was responding to a suggestion by Umno Youth for the Government to restructure the subsidies given to the people so that they could be channelled directly to the target groups.

According to Umno Youth leader Khairy Jamaludin, subsidies for oil and gas were found to benefit the high-income earners more.

The matter has been raised by many quarters but none have submitted a comprehensive delivery system that could meet the target, said Awang Adek, who is also Kelantan Umno deputy liaison chief.

Man with HIV bites dad in the abdomen

A MAN, who is HIV positive, flew into a rage and started to beat up his father and then bit the disabled man in the abdomen, China Press reported.

Hospital authorities in Kuching were now checking if the victim, in his 60s, could have contracted the dreaded virus.

In the 9pm incident on Wednesday at a longhouse near Kuching, the man, in his 40s, suddenly started screaming at the top of his voice.

His father scolded him, causing the man to react violently.

Two of his siblings stopped the attack by hitting him with sticks.

> A woman in Ipoh shamed her husband by writing derogatory words on pieces of paper and placing them on the rear windscreen of his car, Sin Chew Daily reported.

The car, parked along a busy street in the city, drew a lot of attention.
The words in Chinese characters read: “Use my money to spend on a China doll. Conned me of RM50,000 and beat up people because you do not have enough to spend on China doll.”

The woman said her intention was to warn other men not to follow in the footsteps of her husband.

“He was a caring man before he got to know a woman from China, in her 20s, a year ago.
“Besides blowing his savings on her, he also wanted to give away the money meant for our daughter's education to the woman,” she said.
Worse, she claimed her husband had beaten her up over the issue.
She had lodged two police reports and would move to Singapore with her daughter to get away from her unfaithful husband. Source
