Benjy Fined RM5,000 For Drug Possession

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 17 (Bernama) -- Actor Khaeryll Benjamin Ibrahim or Benjy was fined RM5,000 in default six months' jail by the Magistrate Court here today after he was found guilty of possessing 0.24gm of syabu at his residence last year.

Magistrate Hafizza Sauni made the decision after finding that the prosecution had proved its case beyond reasonable doubt against Benjy, who is the only son of veteran actress Azean Irdawaty.

Benjy, 33, committed the offence at a house, A-6-5 Menara Duta 2, Jalan 1/38B Persimpangan Jalan Segambut here at about 4pm on March 11 last year.

He was charged under Section 12(2) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which carries a fine up to RM100,000 or jail term up to five years upon conviction.

Throughout the trial, the prosecution called 14 witnesses and the defence two.

Earlier in mitigation, Benjy's lawyer Amer Hamzah Arshad, asked the court to put his client on good behaviour bond as the accused had no previous conviction and that he was scheduled for surgery tomorrow.

Amer Hamzah also read to the court Benjy's letter to Hafizza.

"My life has turned upside down due to health problems and financial burden of supporting my family. Besides, my mother is suffering from a stage-four breast cancer and she is also depressed by this case," Benjy said in the letter read by Amer Hamzah.

He also read Azean's letter to Hafizza informing about the surgery.

However, deputy public prosecutor Noor Mawarni Abdul Halim asked the court to impose heavy punishment on Benjy as a lesson not only to him, but also to the society. -Bernama
